Betsy's Family (Group 8)

Betsy was born in 1806 and was enslaved at the White Marsh Farm in Maryland. Betsy and her husband, whose first name isn’t known, had four children: Augustin (b.1829), Adelphia (b.1829), Christina (b.1831), and Harriet Anne (b.1834) West. Christina and Harriet were sold to Henry Johnson in 1838 while Adelphia and Augustin were sold to Jesse Batey. All four of Betsy’s children were passengers on the Katharine Jackson, but without their mother. Betsy escaped slavery and is labeled as a runaway in the bill of sale. All of Betsy’s 24 grandchildren were born in Louisiana and never met their grandmother.
