The Winderry Family
Nelly Winderry was born in 1778 and was enslaved on the White Marsh Farm in Maryland for most of her life. With her husband, Dick Blacklock, the couple had three children: Joseph (b.1798), Letty (b.1808), and Nelly (b.1821).
In 1838, Nelly, Joseph, and her daughter Nelly were sold to Henry Johnson and were passengers on the Katharine Jackson. Nelly’s daughter Letty was sold along with her husband to Jesse Batey. Letty married Patrick Hawkins and had nine children, eight of whom were also passengers on the Katharine Jackson. Nelly died after 1851 at least by age 76.
