The Gough Family
Regis Gough was born in 1805 and died on July 19, 1888 on the plantation he’d spent his enslaved life on, St. Inigoes in Maryland. Although Regis was sold to Henry Johnson in 1838, he remained at the Maryland plantation. The bill of sale states that Regis was “md. off” which likely refers to the often ignored Jesuit promise to keep families together. Regis and his wife Maria (b. 1805) had three children: William Henry (b.1835), Joseph (b.1835), and Elizabeth (b.1837). Regis and Maria had twelve grandchildren and appeared in the 1870 and 1880 St. Mary’s County, Maryland census as a free family.
