The Plowden/Hill Family
Bibiana “Bibey” Plowden or Hill was born in 1789 in Maryland. She was enslaved at Newtown Manor with her family until 1838.
Bibiana and her husband, Nicholas, had four children together: Susan (b.1812), Jarred (b.1814), Charlotte (b.1815), and Harriet (b.1821). Nicholas died in 1838, but Bibiana and the rest of her family were transported to Louisiana on the Katharine Jackson.
While most of Bibiana’s family was sold to Henry Johnson, her son Jarred and his wife Rose Anne Scott were sold to Jesse Batey and separated from the family when they stepped off of the Katharine Jackson. Bibiana’s grandchild was also a passenger on the winter voyage. Susan’s daughter Priscilla was seven years old aboard the ship.
Bibiana eventually welcomed three grandchildren before her death after 1851 at the age of at least 62.
